Valley of DoomCoquihalla AreaJune 28/09 Written by Skrick We were camped near Carolin Mines. On Sunday June 28, we headed up to the mine, and found a washout along the trail. There were a couple of boards placed down to allow one to cross the washout. I actually crossed it, but my son wouldn't do it, thinking I was crazy, so I came back over it. I thought it was sketchy at the time. I told my wife what I had done, and she yelled at me. She headed back home Sunday night as she had to work the next morning.
She was due back Tuesday night, so on Monday morning I had to go back to that spot. I was going to ride up to the washout with my friend Kevin, then walk across it and hike to the first mine shaft. Well, somebody moved the boards so I couldn't see over the crest, and I didn't think I was at the washout yet. I wasn't going fast but I hit the boards, couldn't stop, flipped over the edge, and I fell 50 feet down onto the rocks. My quad flipped up and the front bumper came down squarely on the top of my head, breaking my helmet. If it wasn't for my helmet, I would have been killed. If you look at the last photo, you can can see the the red mark from my helmet. Then it flipped off of me and went down another 200 feet, and was being held up by one little tree from going down another 100 feet or so onto the road below. So Kevin hiked down the washout and helped me up. A rock had slammed my spine; everything was numb and I couldn't feel my legs. I had to wait about 20 minutes until I had the power to hike back up the hill. Kevin gave me a ride out on the back of my other ATV, a Honda TRX400EX sport quad with not a lot of room for two people, and not very comfortable. We rode all the way back to camp at the flats across the highway, and I called the ambulance from there.
I spent two nights in the hospital, and received four stitches on my elbow. I have a lot of bruising, some torn muscles in my back, and a real screwed-up ATV. Luckily, the ATV damage was limited to the front left A-arms, axle shaft, front and rear racks, along with a slight bend on the front of the frame. If it weren't for my big ugly bumper it would have been worse. So I went home Tuesday, spent the night, and came back Wednesday determined to get my damn ATV. I went back to the scene of the crime with my trusty GPS locked onto where the ATV was, and called Valley Helicopters to pick it up. He was there within 25 minutes, and 15 minutes later he had dropped it off down at the flats. I got the truck and trailer, and loaded it on. I stayed until Friday, then brought it down to Valley Yamaha; good people there.
